1st Layer Of The Epidermis – Stratum Corneum
This dry, dead layer helps prevent the penetration of microbes and the dehydration of underlying tissues and provides a mechanical protection against the abrasion of the more delicate, underlying layers.
2nd Layer Of The Epidermis – Stratum Lucidum
This thick layer also lowers the effects of friction in the skin, especially in regions like the soles of the feet and palms of the hands and is responsible for making the skin waterproof.
3rd Layer Of The Epidermis – Stratum Granulosum
The stratum granulosum is responsible for the skins barrier properties and makes up approximately 80% of the thickness of the Epidermis. These cells contain keratohyalin granules, which are filled with histidine- and cysteine-rich proteins that appear to bind the keratin filaments together and gives the skin its elasticity.
4th Layer Of The Epidermis – Stratum Spinosum
Interspersed among the keratinocytes of this layer is a type of dendritic cell called the Langerhans cell, which functions as a macrophage by engulfing bacteria, foreign particles, and damaged cells that occur in this layer.
5th layer of the epidermis – Stratum Basale
The stratum basale (basal layer, sometimes referred to as stratum germinativum) is the deepest layer of the five layers of the epidermis and is responsible for the process of cell division (mitosis) which works to replenishes the skin cells. After forming new cells in the basal layer these cells are pushed upward towards the stratum spinosum and through it. The Statum Spinosum and Basal layers are responsible for the elasticity and resiliency of the skin.
The Dermis is the layer of skin beneath the epidermis. This layer of the skin is responsible for protecting the body from stress, strain and provides it with the cushioning capability that enables the skin to withstand impacts such as when the body falls the ground. This layers of the skin is made up of collagen, elastin and blood vessels as well as hair follicles, sweat glands, sebaceous glands, apocrine glands and lymphatic vessels.
It is very important to keep the Dermis thick, strong and healthy as it helps to protect the body and plays a huge part in creating the bulk, (plump appearance) of the skin. The blood vessels contained within this layer of the skin are responsible for delivering the nutrients and oxygen that keeping it functioning properly and looking its best.
Step One of the 4-Stage Face Lifting process: 2-Stage Exfoliation
